Tsavo East Safari
The classic safari from the Kenya Coast — the open country of Tsavo East, the Galana River, the Yatta Plateau, and elephants the colour of the soil.

Red dust and big country
Coast hinterland
Tsavo East is vast, dry and open, and it is the park most coast visitors mean when they say "safari". The soil is red, and the elephants that roll in it take on the same colour — the reason they are so often described as Tsavo's red elephants.
Open plains run to the horizon, broken by the Galana River and by the Yatta Plateau, a long ridge of ancient lava that forms the park's western edge. Aruba Dam draws game in the dry season. Because the country is so open, wildlife viewing here is about distance and patience rather than dense bush.
Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, oryx, lesser kudu and a good range of plains game are all resident. Lion and other predators are present. Nothing is guaranteed on any single drive — that is the nature of a wild park — but Tsavo East gives you a lot of ground to look across.
Tsavo East is reachable from the Mombasa area, which is why it works as a safari for people whose trip is otherwise based on the beach. Park entry fees are set by Kenya Wildlife Service and paid separately.
