Dolphin Watching in Kenya: An Honest Guide
Where dolphins are seen on the Kenya Coast, why nobody can guarantee a sighting, and how to watch them without harming them.

Dolphin watching is one of the most-sold experiences on this coast, and one of the most over-promised. This guide is the version we would want to read.
Where they are seen
The channel between Wasini Island and the mainland, near Shimoni, is the area most consistently associated with dolphins on the Kenya Coast. Boats work that water, and the crews know the patterns.
They are also seen in open water on the crossings south towards Pemba and Zanzibar, though that is incidental to the journey rather than the purpose of it.
Why nobody can guarantee a sighting
Because they are wild animals in open water with somewhere else to be.
Sightings depend on the season, the sea state, the time of day, what the fish are doing and plain luck. A crew that knows the water improves your odds considerably. It does not make them certain.
If an operator guarantees you dolphins, they are either misinformed or they are managing your booking rather than your expectations.
We would rather you booked knowing that.
How to improve your chances
- Go early. Mornings are usually calmer, and calm water makes spotting far easier.
- Pick a settled day. Choppy water hides everything. If conditions are poor we will tell you.
- Watch the water, not your phone. The first sign is usually a break in the surface some distance off.
- Listen to the crew. They have seen this thousands of times and they know what they are looking at.
Watching responsibly
This matters more than the photograph.
- Boats should approach slowly and from the side, never head-on and never through the middle of a group.
- Engines should ease off near animals.
- No chasing, no herding, no cutting in front.
- Getting in the water with them is not something to insist on — it depends on the animals, the conditions and the law, and the crew's decision is final.
A dolphin that leaves is a dolphin that will not be there for the next boat. Good operators behave accordingly.
What else you will see
On a Wasini day the dolphins are one part of it. The reef snorkelling, the island, the lunch and the Shimoni caves are all there regardless of what the channel does on the morning you go — which is exactly why the day is worth booking even on a quiet one.
